The Anglican Diocese of Zaria proudly concludes the 3rd Session of the 5th Synod with a grand finale held at St. Michael Anglican Church, Muchia, Aminu Road, Zaria, Kaduna State. The three-day event reached its peak today, marked by an atmosphere of spiritual growth, unity, and a renewed commitment to the teachings of Christ.
The Sermon by The Rt. Rev’d Dr. Nixon Akpotunumubofa Enekeme
The day’s sermon was delivered by The Rt. Rev’d Dr. Nixon Akpotunumubofa Enekeme, who began with heartfelt appreciation to all parishioners, clergy, and Bishop for their dedication. Sharing his gratitude for his first visit to northern Nigeria, Bishop Enekeme addressed his family’s concern about his safety, humorously mentioning that he was accommodated near the Nigerian Military Depot. Emphasizing that “safety is of the Lord,” he thanked God for His protection.
Bishop Enekeme’s message focused on the virtues of humility, contentment, and faith. He specifically addressed husbands and wives, urging them to nurture their marriages through mutual support and forgiveness. Men were encouraged to value their spouses and be willing to apologise, while women were advised not to take this humility for granted. Quoting Philippians 2:5-9, he emphasized, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” He reminded the congregation that Christ’s humility, obedience, and sacrifice are the foundation of victorious Christian living.
Drawing from Colossians 2:15 and 1 Corinthians 15:20, Bishop Enekeme explained that true victory in life comes through humility, reliance on God, and steadfast faith in Jesus Christ’s triumph over sin and death. He emphasized that salvation is a gift, freely given through Christ, and challenged everyone to continually seek guidance and strength from the Holy Spirit.
A major theme in his message was the need for contentment, as he referenced 1 Timothy 6:6, “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” Cautioning against envy, he shared a personal anecdote about being wrongfully accused of theft, illustrating how contentment and integrity can preserve one’s witness. Bishop Enekeme urged the clergy to resist the temptation to lobby for positions, reminding them that each role in the church comes with its own challenges and rewards, assigned by God in His timing.
Living a Victorious Christian Life
He encouraged the congregation to embrace patience and forgiveness, and to avoid looking down on others, for “you don’t know what God has in store for that person.” He noted that a victorious Christian life inevitably includes trials and misunderstandings, even from family and friends. However, he reassured believers that these struggles would ultimately strengthen their faith and witness.
Bishop Enekeme concluded his message with Genesis 1:26-28, affirming God’s promise of dominion and fruitfulness to His people. He declared that through God’s blessing, believers are equipped to be fruitful and dominate wherever they go.
The sermon concluded with the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus,” emphasizing the steadfastness required to live a victorious Christian life. “Stand in His strength alone, the arm of flesh will fail you; ye dare not trust your own.”
