Diocesan Christmas Carol Service 2024

Report of the 2024 Zaria Anglican Diocese Christmas Carol Service.

Zaria, Kaduna State – December 6, 2024.

The Zaria Anglican Diocese hosted its highly anticipated 2024 Christmas Carol Service on Friday, December 6, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, GRA, Zaria. This annual event, themed The Advent Message, was a deeply spiritual and celebratory gathering that drew members of the diocese and beyond. With a service of nine lessons and ten carols, the event marked the Advent season as a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ and a call to readiness for His second coming.

The ceremony commenced promptly at 4:30 pm, as worshippers filled the church to partake in an evening of carols, prayers, and exhortation, featuring the harmonious voices of the Diocesan Mass Choir.

Opening and Scriptural Readings

The service began with a solemn opening prayer, setting the tone for a worship experience filled with reflection and anticipation. The lessons were beautifully read by representatives from various groups within the church, narrating the story of humanity’s redemption—from the prophecy of the Messiah to the birth of Christ.

Sermon: The Advent Message

The highlight of the service was the sermon delivered by Rev’d Dr. David Ibitayo, who captured the essence of the Advent season.

Speaking from John 1:1-15, Rev’d Dr. Ibitayo reflected on the eternal nature of Christ, describing Him as the Word, the Light, and the Life. He encouraged the congregation to embrace the Advent season as a time to:

  1. Recognize Jesus as the Light of the World
Rev’d Dr. Ibitayo emphasized that Jesus illuminates the path for humanity, guiding us out of spiritual darkness. He explained:

“If your light is not yet shining, it means you are still dwelling in darkness. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).

  1. Proclaim the Coming of Christ
He urged the congregation to take on the role of witnesses, like John the Baptist, by spreading the message of hope and salvation.

“Go out and tell someone that Jesus is the Light of the world. The harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. We must work together to proclaim that Jesus is coming again” (Matthew 9:37).

  1. Understand the Rejection of Jesus
Reflecting on John 3:19-20, Rev’d Dr. Ibitayo explained why some reject Christ, citing humanity’s attachment to evil deeds. He encouraged the faithful to live as beacons of light, drawing others to Christ.

A Call to Action

Rev’d Dr. Ibitayo concluded his sermon by challenging the congregation to reflect on their roles as Christians during Advent:

“Can you deny yourself in order to bear witness to the Light of God? Share the good news of Christ with others so they may partake in the blessings of salvation.”

Special Intercessory Prayers

The service also featured fervent intercessory prayers led by Evangelist Dr. Joseph Olajimeji, who addressed pressing concerns such as:

Economic Hardship: Praying for divine provision for families struggling in the current economic climate.

Travel Mercies: Seeking God’s protection for those traveling during the yuletide season.

Personal Needs: Encouraging attendees to present their personal requests before God, with faith in His power to provide.

Dr. Olajimeji declared:

“Let the weak say, ‘I am strong,’ and the poor say, ‘I am rich,’ because of what the Lord has done for us.”

Closing Benediction and Goodwill Message

The service concluded with a heartfelt benediction by the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev’d Ishaya Baba, who offered prayers of blessing and protection for all attendees. He assured the congregation that:

“By reason of this season, no darkness will come near anyone here. The light of God will continuously shine upon each and every one of us in Jesus’ name.”

The Bishop officially declared the 2024 Christmas Carol Service closed, extending warm Christmas greetings and wishes for a prosperous New Year.

A Joyous Celebration of Advent

The 2024 Christmas Carol Service was a profound reminder of the hope, joy, and responsibility that come with the Advent season. Through worship, the proclamation of God’s Word, and the unity of the congregation, the event highlighted the transformative power of Christ as the Light and Life of the world.

Looking Forward

As the Diocese embarks on the Advent season, it calls on all Christians to share the message of Christ’s love and salvation. Let the light of Christ shine through us as we celebrate His birth and prepare for His glorious return.
