Confirmation and Enrolment Service: A Spiritual Milestone in the Diocese of Zaria Anglican Communion

On the 15th of December 2024, St. George’s Cathedral, Sabon Gari, Zaria, played host to a spiritually uplifting Confirmation and Enrolment Service presided over by the Diocesan Bishop of Zaria, The Rt. Rev’d Ishaya G. Baba. The service, which commenced at 8:00 AM, was a significant event for the diocese, marking a sacred occasion of reaffirmation of faith and commitment to Christian discipleship.

Opening Worship

The service began with the hymn, “Spirit divine, attend our prayers,” creating an atmosphere of reverence and anticipation. Another hymn followed this, “Come ye that love the Lord,” reminding the congregation of the journey of faith toward the eternal Zion. The congregational confession, “I Am Thine, O Lord”, was a poignant moment of penitence and dedication, as worshippers knelt in solemn reflection, resolving to live in love and obedience to God’s commandments. The congregation, in unison, confessed their sins, firmly resolving to live in obedience to God’s commandments and in peace with one another.

Prayers were offered, including the Collect for the Day, the Advent Collect, the Confirmation Collect, and the GAFCON Collect. Scriptural readings followed, with passages from Isaiah 40:1-11, Psalm 146:5-10, and 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, setting the foundation for the day’s message.

The worshippers prepared their hearts for the Bishop’s message by singing “Breathe on Me, Breath of God”. This hymn of surrender and renewal paved the way for a stirring sermon by The Rt. Rev’d Ishaya G. Baba.

The Bishop’s Sermon: “Behold Jesus Christ the Lord”

The highlight of the service was the sermon delivered by The Rt. Rev’d Ishaya G. Baba, titled “Behold Jesus Christ the Lord.” Addressing the candidates for confirmation and enrolment into the Women’s Guild, Girls’ Guild, and Boys’ Brigade, the Bishop emphasized the need for unwavering focus on Jesus Christ. He declared, “Upon my enrolment and confirmation, I am not going to look at my neighbours, priests, or anyone else but Jesus.”

The Bishop’s message revolved around four key instructions for Christian living:

  1. Walk with Jesus Christ: He urged the candidates to cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus, seeking His guidance in all areas of life.
  2. Worship Jesus Christ Alone: The Bishop reminded the congregation of the singular worthiness of Jesus for worship, cautioning against distractions and worldly enticements.
  3. Witness for Jesus Christ: He highlighted the importance of living a life that testifies to Jesus’ love and redemption, stating, “Your life should be the first preaching of Jesus to the world.”
  4. Wait for Jesus Christ: A call for patience and steadfast faith, the Bishop encouraged the faithful to trust in God’s timing, emphasizing that rewards come to those who remain diligent and hopeful in Christ.

A Call to Holiness and Integrity

The Bishop warned against succumbing to societal pressures, peer influence, and unethical shortcuts to success. He illustrated his message with the concept of the “SAD tree”—a metaphor for the destructive consequences of Sex, Alcohol, and Drugs. He exhorted the candidates to remain faithful, choose Christ over compromise, and avoid the allure of materialism and corruption.

He also addressed the challenges faced by modern Christians, including temptations of idolatry, bribery, and dishonesty in personal and professional spheres. Quoting John the Baptist’s humility and dedication, the Bishop admonished the congregation to emulate such steadfastness, emphasizing, “May you choose to walk with the Lord no matter what comes your way.”

A Moment of Renewal and Commitment

The service culminated with a powerful call to salvation. The Bishop led the congregation in a prayer of commitment, urging them to rededicate their lives to Christ. This was followed by the reaffirmation of faith through the Nicene Creed, a testament to the unity and shared belief of the body of Christ.

The Holy Communion Session: A Sacred Prelude

The Holy Communion session, led by Ven. Ben Duru. Worship was enriched by the harmonious rendition of hymns by the Diocesan Mass Choir, setting a reverent atmosphere. The hymn “O Jesus, I Have Promised” stirred the hearts of the congregation, reiterating the candidates’ commitment to serve Christ steadfastly.

Confirmation of Candidates

The Confirmation session was marked by solemnity and reflection. Ven. Ibekute presented 73 candidates—38 females and 35 males—dressed in white, symbolizing purity and devotion. Addressing the candidates, Bishop Baba emphasized the need to renounce evil, live in obedience to God, and embrace the Christian faith wholeheartedly.

The candidates publicly renewed their baptismal vows, declaring:

  • Rejection of all evil forces and sinful desires.
  • Commitment to trust in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Dedication to live as loyal members of God’s Church.

As the Bishop laid hands on each candidate, he prayed, “Be confirmed and strengthened with the Holy Spirit for His service,” to which the congregation responded with a resounding “Amen.” The Bishop concluded with a prayer for their spiritual growth and unwavering faith.

Enrolment into the Women’s Guild

Twelve women, presented by Mrs. Baba, the President of the Mother’s Union, were enrolled into the Women’s Guild. The ceremony highlighted their promise to uphold Christian values and serve as role models. After singing their dedication hymn, “Just As I Am,” they received certificates of membership and blessings from the Bishop.

Admission into the Girls’ Guild

Twenty-three candidates were admitted into the Girls’ Guild. Presented by Mrs. Tabitha Achi, the candidates affirmed their understanding of the guild’s rules and their commitment to its motto: “Show the light of Jesus Christ to those in darkness” (Matthew 5:13-14). They recited the Girls’ Guild prayer and received the Bishop’s blessings to guide them in their spiritual journey.

Commissioning of an Evangelist

Mr. Samson Ibrahim was commissioned as an Evangelist, affirming his calling to serve the Diocese and spread the Gospel. The Bishop, on behalf of the Church, charged him to live as a faithful example of Christ and declared, “Go forth in the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Now Evangelist Samson Ibrahim pledged to faithfully serve the diocese and spread the Gospel globally.

The event served not only as a personal milestone for the candidates but also as a collective renewal of faith for the entire congregation. It reinforced the diocese’s mission to raise a generation of Christians who are committed to walking, worshipping, witnessing, and waiting for Jesus Christ.

The Bishop’s sermon, titled “Behold Jesus Christ the Lord,” provided a pivotal framework for understanding the roles and responsibilities of the newly confirmed and enrolled candidates. It called upon them to embrace a life centred on four key pillars: Walking with Christ, Worshiping Christ alone, Witnessing for Christ, and Waiting on Christ. These themes are not merely doctrinal points but a clarion call to active discipleship, spiritual vigilance, and unwavering faith amidst the challenges of modern life.

As the service concluded, the words of the Bishop resounded in the hearts of the attendees: “May the Spirit of the Lord come upon your life and remain in your life. May you see Jesus and bear record that He is the Son of God.”

Impact on the Diocese

This service reaffirmed the Diocese’s commitment to spiritual growth and community engagement. The Bishop’s exhortations emphasized the need for a Christ-focused life, urging candidates to rise above worldly distractions and live as true witnesses to the faith. His vivid illustrations, such as the analogy of the SAD tree (Sex, Alcohol, Drugs), resonated deeply with both candidates and the congregation, highlighting the Church’s role in addressing societal challenges through faith-based solutions.

The enrolment into the Women’s Guild, Girls’ Guild, and Boys’ Brigade signifies a generational transfer of values and the continuity of Christian service. These groups play a critical role in fostering community spirit, mentoring young believers, and equipping members for a life of service to God and humanity.

A Glorious Conclusion

This service was not merely a ritual but a profound spiritual milestone for the Diocese. It reinforced the Church’s mission to nurture faith, empower individuals, and foster community engagement. The themes of renewal, commitment, and service resonated deeply, leaving a lasting impact on all who participated.

Future Aspirations

As the Bishop poignantly stated, “After this confirmation service, you are going to see Jesus by His grace and begin to do greater things.” This prophetic declaration sets the tone for the Diocese’s vision of an empowered laity, ready to impact their communities positively. The service also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility of the Church to guide its members toward spiritual maturity and social relevance.
